Background: INTRODUCTION: The Palestine Liberation Organisation has been moving troops and arms into southern Lebanon to reinforce the area against attacks from Israel. Two heavy weapons groups are reported to have been moved, including armoured vehicles and amphibious craft. And back in Syria the training programme for the organisation goes on with children, some as young as eight.
SYNOPSIS: Many of the children in this camp outside the Syrian capital Damascus come originally form Saudi Arabia. Now they have joined the PLO the children will be given weapon training as a part of their education. Here the children are being taught how to take apart an automatic weapon and assemble it for firing. Instructions is given by instructors who have themselves been trained by the Russians.
The children in this camp are very young. Although some among the 300 children under training are in their early teens and up to 16, some of them are as young as eight.
There are up to 14 thousand armed soldiers in the PLO between eight and nine thousand of them under the command of Yasser Arafat's Fatah organisation.
The PLO want to see a homeland for the Palestinians established in the area now called Israel. The organisation is well funded by Middle East oil states.
Libya and Syria have given massive amounts of money to support the PLO and help it set up offices throughout the world. They have also been given the money to buy Russian made weapons available to them.
But the main effort of the PLO is still in the establishment of its armed forces both regular and guerrilla. Despite being recognised by over 100 countries, the training of soldiers is considered important to the PLO.
In July, Saudi Arabia made a gift of twenty million US dollars to the Palestinians saying that it gave the money in the hope that it would help the unified Arab overthrow of Israel. A similar amount of money was given to the Lebanese. But even among the Arab states opinion is divided as to whether the weapon to be used against the West is oil or guns.
