Background: HONG KONG GOVERNOR SIR DAVID TRENCH, WHO RETURNED FROM THREE MONTHS LEAVE IN BRITAIN ON SUNDAY (SEPTEMBER 24), GOT A "WARM" WELCOME IN THE SHAPE OF A HOAX BOMB PERSONALLY ADDRESSED TO HIM. THE BOMB WAS PLANTED AT THE FOOT OF A STATUE IN THE CITY'S CENTRAL DISTRICT.

THE BOMB, LITTLE MORE THAN A TIN CAN CHARGED WITH EXPLOSIVE, WAS ADDRESSED TO "BIG TOE" - A PUN ON THE CHINESE CHARACTERISTICS USED FOR THE GOVERNOR'S NAME. BOMB DISPOSAL EXPERTS IGNORED THIS DEVICE FOR EIGHT HOURS WHILE THEY DEALT WITH FIVE OTHER SUSPECTED BOMBS IN OUTLYING DISTRICTS. LATER ANOTHER HOAX BOMB WAS LEFT IN THE CENTRAL DISTRICT, BUT NONE OF THE DEVICES CAUSED ANY INJURIES OR DAMAGE.

APART FROM THESE MINOR INCIDENTS, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF THE INCREASE IN PRO-PEKING VIOLENCE WHICH HAD BEEN EXPECTED TO COINCIDE WITH THE GOVERNOR'S RETURN.

ONE HONG KONG NEWSPAPER - THE PRO-PEKING "NEW EVENING PAST" - SAID THE MASSES WERE TO BE MOBILISED TO TAKE PART IN A "VIGOROUS STRUGGLE IN ALL POSSIBLE FORMS". BUT IT GAVE NO DETAILS. THE NEWSPAPER WAS COMMENTING ON A REMARK BY THE GOVERNOR AT HIS ARRIVAL PRESS CONFERENCE WHEN HE SAID HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT PRO-PEKING ACTIVISTS HAD IN STORE FOR THE COLONY.
