  • Description

ENTHUSIASTIC SPECTATORS CAUGHT THE MOOD OF FESTIVITY WHEN TROUPES FROM LIBYA AND CONGO BRAZZAVILLE GAVE PERFORMANCES AT THE EL ANASSER STADIUM AS PART OF THE FIRST PANAFRICAN FESTIVAL.

WHILE THE DANCING TOOK PLACE AT THE STADIUM, A COMMISSION, CHAIRED BY SENEGAL, NIGERIA AND CAMEROUN MET BEHIND CLOSED DOORS TO DISCUSS THE ESSENCE OF AFRICAN CULTURE; ITS ROLE IN LIBERATION STRUGGLES, AND THE PART IT PLAYS IN THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE COMMISSION WILL CONSIDER SETTING UP A PERMANENT PAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL SECRETARIAT, ONE OF WHOSE MAJOR TASKS WOULD BE TO FACILITATE AN INCREASE IN INTER-AFRICAN EXCHANGES. SOME DELEGATES HAVE ALREADY CALLED FOR AFRICAN NATIONS TO REJECT THE LANGUAGES OF THEIR COLONISERS AND TO RETURN TO THEIR NATIVE TONGUES, BUT OPINION IS SHARPLY DIVIDED ON THE VALUE TO THIS.
