  • Description

Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit resigned on Wednesday. A poet, who became a national hero for ordering the invasion of Cyprus, aims to form a new Government and call for early elections.

After eight turbulent months in office, the 49-year-old Social Democrat broke up the stormy coalition between his Republican People's Party (RPP) and the National Salvation Party (NSP).

Mr. Ecevit handed his resignation to president Fahri Koruturk and agreed to be a caretaker Premier until the formation of a new administration.

As the leader of the biggest party, Mr. Ecevit is almost certain to be asked to form another administration after the President has concluded his consultations.

The RPP has already begun behind-the-scenes negotiations with the right-wing Democratic Party (DP) on a coalition. Alternatively, it might try to form a minority government, observers said.

Mr. Ecevit announced two days before that he was resigning. The simmering dispute within the coalition came to a head last Saturday when the seven NSP coalition ministers tried to stop him leaving on a Scandinavian tour.

The Prime Minister claimed it was no longer possible to govern with the Islamic traditionalists of the NSP and said early elections were the best solution to Turkey's periodic political crises.

Mr. Ecevit has suggested December as a possible polling date.
