  • Description

Villa Coutinho, population 200, is the centre of a wealthy cattle breeding area in the Angoni Highlands of Portuguese East Africa and situated 30 miles in from the Nyasaland border Town Dedza. (140 N of Blantyre)
Today there is a new town Villa Coutinho and the old one has been abandoned to the African bush.

The 10th June ... Portugal's National Day ... was chosen for the official naming of the new town and its Day of Grace. Portuguese residents of their African colony, travelled for many hundreds of miles over rough and dusty bush roads to attend the ceremony and enthusiastically participate in the celebrations.

A programme of native dancing, clay-pigeon shooting, a football match and dance in the evening, was met with loud acclaim and thorough enjoyment.
