    Background: THE SIXTH TOKYO INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR OPENED YESTERDAY WITH 3,000 FIRMS FROM 30 NATIONS TAKING PART. GOVERNOR AZUMA OFFICIALLY OPENED THE FAIR AT A CEREMONY ATTENDED BY EMBASSY STAFF OF THE EXHIBITION NATIONS, AND LEADING BUSINESSMEN.

    THE TARGET FOR FOREIGN BUSINESSMEN DURING THE THREE WEEKS FAIR IS THE GROWING JAPANESE CONSUMER MARKET. THE JAPANESE, IN TURN, HOPE TO SELL EVERYTHING FROM ELECTRONIC CLOCKS TO NUCLEAR POWER EQUIPMENT TO FOREIGN BUYERS.

    THE EMPHASIS IS IN THE 1965 FAIR IS ON FOOD, CLOTHING, SPORTS GOODS, AND HOUSING. A SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF MACHINE TOOLS IS ON DISPLAY AT A SEPARATE FAIR.

    ONE REASON THAT THE UNITED STATES, RUSSIA, FRANCE, AND MANY OTHER NATIONS ARE STAGING IMPRESSIVE EXHIBITS, IS THAT PERSONAL CONSUMPTION IN JAPAN THIS YEAR IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE AT A RATE OF AT LEAST TEN PER CENT.

    OFFICIALS EXPECT ABOUT THREE MILLION VISITORS AT THE FAIR, INCLUDING 10,000 FOREIGN BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVES. BESIDES TEN HALLS WITH 5,200 STANDS, THERE ARE TEN SPECIAL PAVILIONS BUILT BY FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS AND JAPANESE INDUSTRIES.
