  • Description

Repeated outbreaks of mob violence in Cleveland, Ohio, followed the death of the Rev. Bruce Klunder, aged 27, who was run over by a bulldozer and killed on Tuesday during a civil rights demonstration. By yesterday (Wednesday), however, the atmosphere was calmer, but police still rated the situation as potentially explosive.

The Rev. Klunder and several others were demonstrating against the building of a school in a Negro area because they believed it wold further segregation. On the construction site, the young minister and father of two children, was one of four people who flung themselves on the ground to stop a bulldozer. The minister was behind the bulldozer and was crushed to death when it backed over him. A coroner's court has ruled the death "accidental".

Yesterday, civil rights demonstrators marched silently in the rain in memory of the young white minister. They marched first to the offices of the City School Board and later moved on to the City Hall. Their posters repeated their demands for the gearing of school construction to the policy of integrated education.
