  • Description

Demonstrators angered by the choice of a rival city as regional capital kept control of areas of Reggio Calabria on Wednesday (17 February) as heavy concentrations of police and para-military forces converged on the southern Italian city. There has been rioting in Reggio Calabria during the past seven months in an effort to have the city named provincial capital of the new Calabria region.

This film was shot by VISNEWS cameraman Enzo di Giambattista who has been at the scene during the crucial days leading up to Tuesday's (16 February) decision to make neighbouring Catanzaro provincial capital. This and previous coverages in the riot-torn city have been made at considerable personal risk to the film crew in view of the nature of the fighting in the streets. During the past seven months, two policemen and two civilians have been killed and hundreds have been injured. Many of the cameraman's coverages from Reggio have been seen in the Eurovision news exchange through Italian Television in Rome.
