  • Description

Talks have been held in Algeria between the visiting Cuban Trade Minister, Senor Marcello Fernandez Font, and his Algerian counterpart. The object of Senor Font's visit was not disclosed, but he was said to have brought with him a message from the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro.

Senor Font arrived in Algiers on Monday (2 April) and began discussions with Trade Minister Abdelghani Akbi and other government officials almost immediately. Later, he was expected to meet Algerian President Benjedid Chadli to deliver his message from President Castro.

Relations between Algeria and Cuba are close, and on his last visit two years ago, Dr. Castro described Africa as a continent 'struggling for freedom'. Algeria has been seeking help for its programme of industrial expansion and improved medical care, and Cuba has health workers in twenty countries -- mostly African. President Castro said one group aided by Cuban doctors and nurses was the Polisario Front. The Algerian-backed guerrillas are fighting for independence in the Western Sahara against Moroccan government forces. According to Dr. Castro, this sort of assistance will increase in the future.
