Background: The new football season in England began Saturday (9 August) when Liverpool beat West Ham United 1-0 in the Charity Shield match at Wembley Stadium. This is an annual fixture between the First Division champions of the English League -- in this case, Liverpool -- and the Football Association Cup winners.
SYNOPSIS: The first half, with West Ham, in the white stripe, kicking right to left. Brooking, whose goal won last season's Cup final, showed his skills, but Liverpool's defenders were in the right place.
In the eighteenth minute, Liverpool launched into the movement that brought the game's only goal. The ball is worked to left-back Alan Kennedy, whose blazing left-foot shot is parried by West Ham goal-keeper Phil Parkes. The rebound went to McDermott, who was waiting for just such as error.
Seventeen minutes into the second half, West Ham had a superb build-up and their best change to equalise. As usual, Brooking was at the heart of it. His shot skimmed past the fingers of Liverpool keeper, Clemence, and West Ham's Cross bicycle-kicked over the bar.
Liverpool came back relentlessly. A nimbly back-hell from Dalglish, but Johnson was way off target.
Brooking again ... and the frustration he knows too well ... setting up an opening so skilfully that no teammate can capitalise on it.
Liverpool have begun the Eighties as they played in the 1970s .. another success, another trophy. Their captain Phil Thompson collected the Charity Shield from the former Manchester City, Coventry and England manager, Joe Mercer. As English champions, Liverpool will compete again the European Cup, which is currently held by their fierce rivals, Nottingham Forest. And a final lap of honour for West Ham, one of football's most popular clubs.
