    GHANA'S NEW PARLIAMENT - THE SECOND IN THE ONE-PARTY REPUBLIC - WAS SWORN IN, IN ACCRA, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

    THE FIRST SESSION MET ONE DAY AFTER THE UNOPPOSED ELECTION OF 198 CANDIDATES OF THE CONVENTION PEOPLES' PARTY. UNDER PRESIDENT NKRUMAH, THE NEW MEMBERS ARE ALL DEDICATED TO THE GOAL OF A SOCIALIST GHANA AND EVENTUALLY A UNITED AFRICA UNDER A CONTINENTAL UNION GOVERNMENT.

    AT THEIR FIRST MEETING, MEMBERS APPROVED THE NOMINATION OF DR. NKRUMAH FOR A FURTHER FIVE YEARS AS PRESIDENT. THEY ALSO ELECTED A NEW SPEAKER AND HIS DEPUTY.

    (PRESIDENT NKRUMAH WAS SWORN IN AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE TODAY. MANY VISITORS WERE SEARCHED AS THEY ENTERED. THE NEW PARLIAMENT HAS 84 MORE MEMBERS THAN THE OLD ONE AND INCLUDES DIPLOMATS, TRADE UNIONISTS, TEACHERS AND JOURNALISTS. THE CONVENTION PEOPLES' PARTY HAS THE RIGHT TO UNSEAT ANY MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT WHO LOSES ITS CONFIDENCE.)
