Worst bomb incident in the recent Lebanon troubles caused the deaths of six people. It exploded inside a soft-drinks lorry parked outside a large department store in Beirut yesterday morning, just as the first wave of shopping crowds was on the pavements. Fire broke out in the store, which was destroyed. Besides the dead, more than 40 people were injured and it is feared that there might be more bodies inside the building yet.
Later in the day, a second bomb exploded about 50 yards away from the store. A stick of dynamite was thrown at the Tivoli Theatre but no one was injured.
The lorry bomb explosion was felt a mile away and the driver was killed. A warrant for the arrest of the driver's mate is said to have been issued. The blast followed a night of intermittent shooting and a threat from the rebels to send out nightly commandos to sabotage and harass the Chamoun forces.
