    The Libyan Foreign Minister, Mansour Rashid Al-Keikha, on Friday (23 March) declined to comment on United States charges that two Libyan Mirage jet fighters attacked an American transport over the Mediterranean on Wednesday (21 March).

    The Minister was speaking in Benghazi where he is attending the fourth session of the Moslem Foreign Ministers' conference.

    The United States Government claimed the C-130 Hercules was fired on while flying off Malta over international waters. The propellor-driven transport escaped into clouds.

    Defence and State Departments in Washington have refused to describe the activity of the aircraft beyond saying it was a transport aircraft on a military mission form Athens.

    Washington insisted the aircraft was never closer than 75 miles (120 kms) to the Libyan coast, and was well inside international air space.

    The U.S. Government has protested to the libyan Government over the incident.

    SYNOPSIS: A United States Air Force base in Athens, Greece, headquarters of a C-one-thirty Hercules transport unit, one of whose aircraft was claimed by the United States to have been shot at by Libyan fighters on Wednesday.

    An aircraft taxies past the Hercules said by the Americans to have been the subject of the attack. Washington claimed the aircraft was fired on off Malta while flying over international waters. It escaped by flying into clouds. Washington refused to say other than that the aircraft was on a military mission form Athens.

    In Benghazi, Libyan Foreign Minister Mansour Rashid Al-Keikha has refused to comment on the incident following a U.S. protest to the Libyan Government.
