  • Description

The four cars that started from Athens, Greece, on Wednesday (15 January) in this year's Monte Carlo Rally have as fighting chance to do well because of unusually mild weather in Europe.

Normally cars that start from Athens are considered to be at a disadvantage because snow in the mountains of northern Yugoslavia and southern Austria makes their route extremely difficult. But this year conditions are much easier and the Athens starters will have the advantage of a shorter route to Gap, in southern France, to complete the first stage of the rally.

The total field for this year is only 100 cars, less than half the usual number. The biggest drop is among the private entries, who can no longer afford the rising costs and cannot get support from advertisers.

The four teams who started form Athens were A. Pusnik and R; Freyer in a Renault Gordini, B.Dongues and "Thouluc" in an Alfa Romeo, P.Kolic and N Savic in a BMW and S.Milosevic and S. Mikic in a Ford Escort.
