THIS WAS AT A TIME WHEN PRESIDENT ALPHONSE MASSAMBA-DEBAT - TODAY REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN OVERTHROWN BY AN ARMY COUP - WAS APPEALING FOR NATIONAL UNITY.

    TRAVELLERS ARRIVING TODAY IN KINSHASA, CAPITAL OF NEIGHBOURING CONGO-KINSHASA, SAID TROOPS HAD BEEN IN CONTROL OF ALL STRATEGIC POSITIONS IN BRAZZAVILLE WHEN THEY LEFT. THEY SAID THE ARMY HAD BEEN ON THE STREETS IN FORCE SINCE LAST WEDNESDAY.

    RADIO-BRAZZAVILLE REPORTS, MONITORED IN KINSHASA, SAID PRESIDENT MASSAMBA-DEBAT HAD BETRAYED THE IDEALS OF THE 1963 REVOLUTION WHICH BROUGHT HIS TO POWER FOLLOWING A COUP BY CONGOLESE TRADE UNIONS.

    THE RADIO SAID ARMY HIGH COMMAND HAD ASKED LIEUTENANT AUGUSTIN POIGNET, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE, TO TAKE OVER AS PRESIDENT.
