PRESIDENT SEGNI HAS BEEN CONSULTING WITH LEADERS OF ITALY'S POLITICAL PARTIES IN HIS SEARCH FOR A NEW CABINET FOLLOWING LAST FRIDAY'S RESIGNATION OF SIGNOR ALDO MORO'S CENTRE-LEFT COALITION GOVERNMENT.

ALL FOUR PARTIES WHICH MADE UP THE LAST GOVERNMENT HAVE URGED THE PRESIDENT TO ATTEMPT RECONSTITUTING A CENTRE-LEFT COALITION. THE SOCIALISTS, SOCIAL DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS HAVE RECOMMENDED SIGNOR MORO SHOULD CONTINUE AS PRIME MINISTER. ON TUESDAY, THE FOURTH PARTY, THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS ALSO DECLARED THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE COALITION, WITHOUT MENTIONING ANY CANDIDATES FOR PRIME MINISTER.

DURING THE DAY, PRESIDENT SEGNI HAD DISCUSSIONS WITH SIGNOR FANFANI, WHO PIONEERED A FORM OF CENTRE-LEFT COALITION DEPENDING ON PARLIAMENTARY SUPPORT FROM THE SOCIALISTS.

SIGNOR FANFANI DECLINED TO COMMENT ON THE DISCUSSIONS, AS DID THREE OTHER FORMER PRIME MINISTERS, SIGNOR LEONE; SIGNOR MARIO SCELBA, AND SIGNOR GUISEPPE PELLA, WHO REPRESENT THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT RIGHT WING BY THE END OF THE DAY, IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS ALSO FAVOURED THE RETURN OF SIGNOR MORO AT THE HEAD OF THE COALITION.

ON WEDNESDAY, THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS FORMALLY PROPOSED TO THE PRESIDENT THAT SIGNOR MORO BE NAMED TO HEAD ANOTHER COALITION. PARLIAMENTARY GROUPS OF ALL LEADING PARTIES ALSO CALLED ON THE PRESIDENT FOR DISCUSSIONS. THEY INCLUDED SIGNOR PALMIRO TOGLIATTI, LEADER OF THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY, SIGNOR GAVA AND SIGNOR ZACCAGNINI OF THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS, SIGNOR ROBERTI, LEADER OF THE ITALIAN SOCIAL MOVEMENT, AND SIGNOR GIOVANNI MALAGODI, LEADER OF THE LIBERALS.

PRESIDENT SEGNI IS EXPECTED TO COMPLETE HIS CONSULTATIONS ON THURSDAY, AND ANNOUNCEMENT WILL FOLLOW SOON AFTERWARDS.

(THE COALITION GOVERNMENT HEADED BY SIGNOR MORO RESIGNED AFTER AN UNEXPECTED DEFEAT IN THE ASSEMBLY ON A VOTE TO GRANT STATE AID TO PRIVATE, MOSTLY ROMAN CATHOLIC, SCHOOLS.)
