  • Description

Syria's President Hafez al-Assad has warned that Syria will continue increasing its military strength until 'the liberation of occupied territories'. The President, speaking at the opening of the Syrian Trades Union General Federation's 18th annual conference in Damascus, the capital, on Saturday (21 September), said the nation's military strength had already been increased since last October's war with Israel, in which Israel occupied some Syrian territory - particularly along the dividing Golan Heights.

But he added that Syria still wanted peace, and even in the event of a new it would go into that battle 'looking for peace'.

SYNOPSIS: The Syrian Trades Union General Federation opened its eighteenth annual conference in Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Saturday. The United Nations ambassador to Syria was among those present.

The principal figure was Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, who arrived at the Trades Union General Federation building to a warm welcome from gathered crowds.

There was another warm welcome from the delegates inside as President Assad took his seat on the main platform to tell them - and so warn the world - that Syria would not rest until its' occupied territories are liberated.' The delegates came from fifty countries from the Arab world, Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

President Assad said that since last October's Arab war with Israel - in which some Syrian land was occupied, principally along the dividing Golan Heights - Syria had been increasing its military strength. It would continue to increase this strength, he said, until those occupied lands were free.

But Syria still wanted peace, said President Assad, and even in the event of another war Syria would 'go into battle looking for peace'.
