Soccer - and in Zagreb, Spain defeated Yugoslavia on Wednesday (4 October) in a group three match for the European Cup.

SYNOPSIS: Spain and Yugoslavia - old rivals - but it was Spain who brought it off, using their few scoring opportunities. Juanito put the Spaniards in the lead after 20 minutes. Villar shot from about 20 metres and Juanito slipped a rebound off a Yugoslav player into the net. World Cup finalists Spain put most of their hopes into a well organised and cool defence, relying on counter attacks to create opportunities in front of the Yugoslav goal. Spain's second goal came with a header from Santillana after a free kick from Del Bosque.

Yugoslavia spent most of the time in the Spanish half but without much chance of penetrating the cool, thickly packed Spanish defence.

The Yugoslavs scored their only goal in the last seconds of the first half, when Susic broke away on the left wing and centred to Halihodzic, who beat Miguel Angel from close range.

A free kick for Yugoslavia but to no avail. In the last 25 minutes Savic and Cukrov substituted for Zajec and Zungul in the Yugoslavian side and Spanish goalkeeper Miguel Angel was called on to prevent them equalising with a series of brilliant saves.

The score, Spain two goals, Yugoslavia one.
