Background: The Soviet gymnastic star Olga Korbut, Olympic gold-medallist and already a veteran of her national team at the age of 21, has staged her final performance in the current Russian tour of the United States. and it could be Miss. Korbut's final public performance anywhere before ??? retires.
SYNOPSIS: Miss Korbut displayed her prowess on the balance beam to a Philadelphia audience on Monday, singing to a Christmas Carol in honour of the festive season. But she says she's getting married next year -- and has already bought her wedding dress.
Miss. Korbut, who achieved international fame with her gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics in West Germany, won't reveal the name of the man she intends to marry. She'll only say he is 'just an ordinary boy' -- an administrator at a physical education school somewhere in the Soviet Union. She bought her dress earlier this month during the tour across the United States -- paying 170 dollars for an old-fashioned synthetic fabric dress off the rack. It's cut with a high neck-line and waist, has an illusion yoke, and is trimmed with Venice lace. It came with a matching veil.
This was Miss. Korbut's fourth tour of the United States. Her plans for the future -- apart from marriage -- aren't quite settled. But they include children, she says. A one-time ambition to be an actress has now been abandoned. Miss. Korbut thinks if she does continue a career it will probably be in gymnastics -- but as a choreographer rather than performing herself.
