  • Description

The development of the harbour of Port-Louis in Mauritius and the reclamation of the Mer Reuge area for industrial was began recently with the aid of a loan of nearly three-million sterling from the British Government.

The area of land to be reclaimed amounts to 224 acres. The reclamation is linked to the dredging of a deep water channel in the Port-Louis harbour. The total cost of the preliminary land reclamation will be met by a two-million sterling (five-million dollar) loan from the British Government and a further million sterling will be made available for industrial development of the area.

The decision of the British Government was conveyed to the Mauritius Minister of Communications on July 18th. The grant follows a study by British experts which took full account of the high priority given by the Mauritius Government's four-year plan to the creation of job opportunities. The Mer Rouge Industrial Estate should provide at least 7,700 new jobs.
