    THE GRAND TRIANON, IN THE GROUND OF THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES, NEAR PARIS, HAS BEEN REBUILT AT A COST OF GBP 3,500,000. IT IS TO BE REOPENED BY PRESIDENT DE GAULLE ON JUNE 10TH.

    DESCRIBED AS THE MASTERPIECE OF 17TH CENTURY ART, THE GRAND TRIANON WAS BUILT BY LOUIS XIV AND IN 1808 WAS A SHOWPIECE OF FRENCH CULTURE AND ELEGANCE. BUT LACK OF FUNDS AND THE FRENCH REVOLUTION TOOK A HEAVY TOLL AND IT HAS TAKEN YEARS OF WORK TO RESTORE THE CHATEAU.

    NOT ONLY THE BUILDING NEEDED EXTENSIVE AND EXPERT REPAIR WORK, IT WAS ANOTHER MAJOR TASK TO RESTORE THE FURNITURE AND TRACE BACK ORIGINAL PIECES WHICH WERE SOLD IN AUCTIONS. SOME WERE FOUND IN PRIVATE HOMES, AND OTHER IN MUSEUMS. MORE THAN 250 CRAFTSMEN WERE EMPLOYED IN RESTORING THE PLASTER, WOODWORK AND ORNAMENTS, WHICH INCLUDING THE RESTORATION OF THOUSANDS OF FLEURS-DE-LIS, DEFACED AT THE TIME OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.

    NOW MORE THAN FIVE MILES OF CABLE, 350 TELEPHONES, POWER POINTS, AIR CONDITIONING AND 21 BATHROOMS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. THE GRAND TRIANON WILL BE USED AS A RESIDENCE FOR VISITING HEADS OF STATE, AND AS A RETREAT FOR THE FRENCH PRESIDENT.
