SYNOPSIS: The 16th General Assembly of the Alliance of Cocoa Producing Countries opened in Abidjan on Friday. About 30 delegates attended from the six member countries - Brazil, Cameroun, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo.

The main development at the conference was the announcement of a draft international agreement between the cocoa-producing countries - this would settle the problems that bedevil the international cocoa trade, especially prices, quotas and stocks of cocoa.

The Ivory Coast delegation presented the draft agreement. The Ivory Coast speakers said that there had been ten years of empty words at the level of the United Nations and its specialised agencies over a long-term agreement with consumers. Until something was done, the Ivory Coast will present an interim agreement between producers and consumers, the Ivorian Minister of Agriculture Mr Sawadogo said.
