The MCC cricket team touring Australia suffered a day of humiliation on Friday (6 November) at the hands of the Victorian "Eleven", holders of Australia's Sheffield Shield. It was the first day of the match, and one dominated by pace bowler Alan Thompson who took six MCC wickets for 80 runs, off 24 overs.
The MCC were all out in 260 minutes of play, having scored only 142 runs. Thompson's bowling performance and ability to worry the Englishmen may well have earned him a cap in the Australian test side. Through helped a little by a rain-freshened pitch, Thompson frequently made the ball lift dangerously.
English left-hander John Edrich struggled hard for a well-deserved innings of 44 but the scoring rate was very slow. MCC Vice-Captain Collin Cowdrey, who has scored three test centuries, during his career, on the Melbourne Cricket Ground, failed to score for the second successive innings.
Later in the day Victoria scored 38 for the loss of one wicket..that of Australian Captain Bill Lawry.... before play ended. A very small crowd ... by Melbourne standards ....watched the game.
