  • Description

A bomb shattered the parked car of Sanhor Antonio Monteiro de Aguiar--the only Socialist member of Madeira's ruling junta--- in Funchal on Monday (23 February).

No-one was injured in the blast, which also blew out windows in surrounding buildings and damaged several shop fronts.

Suspicion immediately fell on the Separatist Madeira Liberation Front (FLAMA), but so far authorities have been unable to connect the group with the explosion---and none of the FLAMA spokesmen are claiming responsibility.

Madeira's seven man junta was sworn in at the weekend by Portuguese Prime Minister Admiral Jose Pinheiro de Azevedo. The ceremony was marred by another blast...it exploded on the road to Funchal's airport---minutes before Admiral Azevedo's motorcade passed by.

Senhor Aguiar's Socialist Party was the only political group to demonstrate in support of the Portuguese leader during his visit.

The Centrist Popular Democrat Party(PPD)---which won more than 60 per cent of the vast in last year's elections for a Portuguese constituent assembly---refused to attend the weekend swearing-in ceremony because it wanted more seats on the junta.

The Madeiras are a north Atlantic island group---lying about 360 miles (600 kilometres) west of Africa. They were colonised by the Portuguese in the 15 century.
