  • Description

A Communist offensive in the South Vietnamese province of Quang Nam in July has
been the scene of the heaviest fighting since last year's Paris Peace agreement.

The South Vietnamese Command has described the fighting over the past two weeks
as a major offensive. But military sources remain divided about the true
objective of the drive. Some sources believe the Communist aim is to extend
their area of control in the west of Quang Nam Province, while others see it as
a campaign to test support for the Viet Cong among the local population. there
is also a theory that the drive could pose a long-term threat to the vital
North-South Highway running along the Central Coast.

On Tuesday (30 July) close quarter fighting was reported on the edge of the town
of Thuong Duc as Communist forces kept up their drive against positions guarding
approaches to Danang city -- the site of an important South Vietnamese air base.

The village is twenty miles (32 kms) from Danang.

At a hilltop camp near the village there were several casualties from the
Communists' artillery. An attempt to evacuate one wounded government soldier by
helicopter had to be abandoned because of enemy anti-aircraft fire.

The Saigon Command, which by Wednesday (31 July) had not officially reported the
ground attack on Thuong Duc, said scattered fighting around it and two other
nearby district capitals the previous day had left 40 Communist troops dead. It
gave government losses in the skirmishing as four killed and 25 wounded.

There were reports on Tuesday that Thuong Duc was still holding out.

Southeast of Danang at the village of Dai Loc hundreds of refugees have been
escaping from the fighting. Dai Loc is one of the three district towns, to the
south of Danang where skirmishes have been reported. As the refugees made their
way across a river from the town, buses were waiting to take them out of the
    fighting zone.
