Background: An Indonesian Communist Leader is on trial in Djakarta accused of complicity in the abortive 1965 coup. He is known as simply Sukatno and is the former chairman of the Communist Youth Organization Permuda Rakjat.
He told a military court yesterday (friday) he had no regrets for attempting to overthrow the government because he believed that communism was the only way to alleviate the hardships of the common people.
Sukatno, who is aged 39, was captured in East Java two years ago during an anti-communist operation in which the former Communist Party Chairman was killed.
He could be executed if found guilty. The trial is continuing.
