    ONE OF THE CENTRES THEY VISITED WAS A FORMER CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN THE CITY, NOW PACKED WITH FAMILIES UPROOTED FROM THEIR HOMES DURING THE VIET CONG OFFENSIVE OF JANUARY 30.

    MADAME NGUYEN VAN THIEU, WIFE OF THE PRESIDENT, DONATED 50 BAGS OF RICE TO THE REFUGEE CENTRES. MADAME NGUYEN CAO KY BROUGHT A GIFT OF 200,000 PIASTRES (APPROX GBP1,000 STERLING) FOR THE HOMELESS.

    MEANWHILE, SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT MEDICAL TEAMS, ASSISTED BY U.S. ARMY DOCTORS, ARE EMBARKING ON A MASS VACCINATION PROGRAMME IN THE REFUGEE CENTRES. THE THREAT OF A MAJOR CHOLERA EPIDEMIC STILL HANGS OVER SAIGON, EVEN THOUGH MORE THAN 40,000 INJECTIONS HAVE ALREADY BEEN GIVEN TO MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. THIRTEEN COUNTRIES HAVE ANSWERED SOUTH VIETNAM'S CALL FOR MEDICAL AID.

    ALSO VISITING THE REFUGEES THAT SAME DAY WAS THE VATICAN REPRESENTATIVE IN VIETNAM, MONSIGNOR PALMAS. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY VIETNAMESE ARCHBISHOP NGUYEN VAN BINH.
