Background: Coretta King, widow of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, received a posthumous award to her husband from Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda in Lusaka on Wednesday (26 November).

The award appointed the late Dr. King a "Grand Commander of the Order of the Grand Companion of Freedom, First Division".

Mrs. King is making her first visit to Africa for eighteen years and she is accompanied by her three children and black U.S. Congressman Andrew Young.

Mrs. King has continued her husband's work and is now President of the Martin Luther King Centre for Social Change in Atlanta.

She officially opened the new U.S. Information Centre in Lusaka during her visit and in her address said that black Americans had much in common with Africans, particularly in the struggle for liberation and development.

Congressman Young also commented on African-American black empathy, claiming that blacks in the United States "Would fight to end U.S. military involvement in Angola".

Mr. Young said he would urge the U.S. Government to put pressure on the Soviet Union to prevent the supply of arms to Angola by withholding wheat exports.

Mrs. King and Congressman Young will visit Nairobi and Lagos after leaving Zambia.
