  • Description

Israeli security forces scoured the hilly countryside near the Lebanese border on Friday (6 December) in a search for a band of Arab guerrillas who raided Rosh Hanikra Kibbutz earlier in the day.

The attack began before dawn, when the guerrillas entered a two-storey apartment block in the Kibbutz, and wounded a settlement worker. One Arab was later discovered and killed in another part of the settlement.

As Ships of the Israeli navy patrolled the shore, police and troops fanned out along the frontier to hunt for the dead man's companions, after military sources announced that, shortly before the attack, a hole had been discovered in the security fence designed to seal the Israeli boarder with Lebanon. Tracks there indicated that at least three men were involved, they said.

The raid on Rosh Hanikra was the third on a northern Israeli community in less than a month. The town of Beth Shean was the scene of a similar attack on 19 November, when four civilians and three guerrillas were killed. Six days ago the village of Rihaniya was attacked with on israeli killed and two guerrillas captured. In the past few days, Israeli artillery has been shelling alleged guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon in what the Army has described as preventitive strikes.

Later, Defence Minister Shimon Peres issued a tough warning to Lebanon on the consequences of further guerrilla attacks.

SYNOPSIS: The countryside along Israel's border with Lebanon was the scene of a mass security hunt on Friday. Troops and police moved in after Arab guerrillas made an early-morning attack on the settlement of Rosh Hanikra, wounding one man. The kibbutz is three miles from the border with Lebanon, and security forces began checking all vehicles in the area.

One Arab was later short, and security forces searched throughout the day for his companions. Three men are alleged to have taken part in the raid -- the third on a northern Israeli community in recent weeks.

Ships from the Israeli navy patrolled offshore as the search went on, but poor weather hampered the use of helicopters.

Israeli military sources revealed that , shortly before the attack, a hole had been discovered in the security fence along the border with Lebanon. Tracks there indicated that at least three men were involved, they said.

In the past few days, Israeli artillery has shelled alleged guerrilla bases in the south of Lebanon, in what the Army termed as preventitive strikes. This followed the attacks on beth Shean and Rihaniya during November.

As the search continued in the waterlogged countryside near Rosh Hanikra, Israeli Defence Minister Shimon Peres issued a tough warning to Lebanon about further guerrilla attacks.
