Background: President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire told reporters in Paris on Monday (26 March) that French President Georges Pompidou would pay an official visit to Zaire next year.
The statement came after a meeting between the two heads of state which took place on the last day of President Mobutu's three-day private visit to France.
When asked about the possibility of his country buying the French Mirage jet aircraft, he said that a French air-force mission is to visit Zaire at the beginning of April to discuss this issue.
President Mobutu also said that Zaire was a regular arms purchaser from France, and that his country's armoured division was equipped with French Panhard tanks. But he indicated that Zaire will not be purchasing the Anglo-French supersonic Concords airliner.
President Mobutu left for Brussels later on Tuesday (27 March) to meet King Baudouin of Belgium.

President Mobutu then went on to say that President Pompidou would pay an official visit to Zaire next year. President Mobutu's trip to France followed his official visit to Mauritania. The President left for Brussels later on Tuesday where he met King Baudouin of Belgium. He planned to return to France later on route home.
