    BUDDHISTS FROM ALL OVER ASIA CONCLUDED THEIR TWO-WEEK CONVENTION IN SINGAPORE ON MONDAY (JANUARY 16). IT WAS THE FIRST TO BE HELD SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR II.

    THE LAST CONVENTION WAS HELD IN MAINLAND CHINA IN 1949. THE CONVENTION WAS ATTENDED BY SENIOR MONKS FROM HONG KONG, MALAYSIA, THE PHILIPPINES, TAIWAN, THAILAND AND SINGAPORE.

    THROUGHOUT THE CONVENTION, AN ESTIMATED 10,000 LAY-BUDDHISTS AND DEVOTEES HAD GATHERED AT THE TEMPLE. MONKS HAD TO SHAVE OFF THEIR HAIR. NUNS HAD ONLY A SMALL PATCH SHAVED, THEN TINY WHITE CIRCLES MARKED THE SPOTS WHERE THE HEAD SHOULD BE BRANDED BY BURNING JOSS-STICKS.
