Background: About 5,000 Chadian nationals who took refuge in neighbouring Cameroon after the collapse of Chad's central government in 1979 have now ben repatriated. After leaving the sprawling refugee camp of Kousseri, in Cameroon, they crossed the river Shari on huge barges, and were taken by coach to Chad's capital, N'Djamena. The operation was carried out by a government relief agency, and members of the Chadian Youth Organisation. Children and old people are now being cared for by Red Cross officials. The first stage of the operation was completed on July 19. Similar programmes are being planned to return other Chadians still living in refugee camps in Nigeria.
