  • Description

A young woman and her two twin daughters were killed and 37 other people injured on Thursday night (24 July) when a tornado hit the small town of St. Bonaventure, near Montreal in Quebec State.

The tornado struck the small community of a thousand inhabitants twice within half-an-hour, uprooting trees, wrecking homes, and leaving an estimated two million dollars worth (840,000 sterling) of damage.

The woman and her two children were killed when the winds sent their caravan home tumbling over for 150 feet (50 metres). A baby was thrown out of the caravan into a stream.

A church bell tower collapsed, narrowly missing a car full of people, and power lines were brought down. The injured were taken to hospital at nearby Drummondville, and police cordoned off the town to prevent looting.

the edge of the tornado also passed over the neighbouring town of St. David, but no injuries or damage were reported.
