  • Description

Brazil's President Ernesto Geisel has been meeting with West German Government leaders in Bonn for talks on closer economic co-operation between the two countries. West Germany announced on the first day of the talks (6 March) a 25 million U.S. dollar loan for Brazil, to help develop the country's backward North-East region.

SYNOPSIS: Son of a German Immigrant to Brazil, President Geisel was the first brazilian head of state to visit Germany in 100 years. President Geisel was welcomed outside West German President Scheel's residence the "Villa Hammerschmidt" on the outskirts of Bonn by a military guard of honour.

Early discussions between the two leaders covered bilateral relations and Brazil's potential role as a mediator between industrialised and developing nations. Reuters News Agency reported that Brazil's Foreign Minister, Antonio Azeredo do Silveira, who was accompanying President Geisel, met his West German counterpart Hans-Dietrich Genscher. It was reported they discussed a controversial nuclear deal under which West German firms will supply Brazil with eight nuclear reactors, a fuel recycling plant and technology for uranium enrichment.

Later in the day President Geisel went to the Memorial for the "Victims of War and Terrorism" in the Bonn Hofgarten for a wreath-laying ceremony.

For President Geisel the reported nuclear deal has brought controversy. The United States has opposed the deal and President Carter is expected to exert pressure for its cancellation during his planned visit to Brazil in late March. The U.S. has fears Brazil might use the uranium to make nuclear weapons.

President Geisel will be in West Germany until Saturday. He has with him six of his Government Ministers and nearly eighty prominent Brazilian businessmen. The President planned to meet with West Germany's Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, on Tuesday (7 March).
