  • Description

The success of the Marxist candidate, Senator salvador Allenda, in the recent ( September 4 ) President election in Chile is regarded as one of the most important developments in Latin America since the Cuban revolution 12 years ago.

Chile looks like becoming the first western democracy to vote a Communist into supreme office. Dr. Allende obtained only 36 per cent of the vote and his election still has to be confirmed by the Chilean Congress on October 24. But it seems almost certain that he will get sufficient support to become Head of State.

Dr. Allende won his victory with the backing of the country's peasants and the town's shanty dwellers. The retiring Christian Democrat President, Dr. Eduaro Frei, earned much personal popularity in the last six years by bringing Chile overdue reforms but the presidential election showed that many considered the reform too slow.

Among the sweeping changes which the new President could introduce are; nationalisation of the American-dominated copper mines; breaking of the power of the rich families who control much of the wealth and influence in the country; recognition of most Communist States; and an end to Chile's hostility to Cuba.

A Marxist Chile is not expected to worry its non-Communist neighbours unduly. Dr. Allende will have a majority in Congress only through a coalition of Jiverse Left-wing elements. Which will curtail any extremism. But there is no doubt that the 62-year old leader favours the spread of Communism through Latin America; when the remnants of Che Guevarra's guerrillas escaped from Bolivia, Dr. Allende flew to the North of Chile to greet them.

First reaction in Chile to the election result included panic dealings on the Stock Exchanges in Valparaiso and Santiago and a rush of withdrawals from banks.

Dr. Allende claims that the people would be able to vote the Marxists our of power in a subsequent election, despite the fact that this has never happened in the entire history of Communism.
