  • Description

A special United Nations conference designed to promote the development of adequate food standards in Africa convened in Accra, Ghana, on Monday (15 September) for a 5-day meeting.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission is under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organisation and World Health Organisation of the United Nations. A special Coordinating Committee for Africa was organised in 1973. The conference in Accra is the second by the Committee.

It is being held in the Kwame Nkrumah Conference Centre and includes delegates from 42 African countries as well as observers from Britain, France, and the U.N.

It was opened officially by Ghana's Colonel George Minyila, Commissioner for Industries. He said, "As countries within the same geographic region, there is the need for effective coordination and harmonisation on three levels - national, regional and sub-regional".

Ghana was chosen in 1974 to be the Coordinating Centre for the Africa region.

The object of the committee's work is to help develop acceptable standards of food labelling and analysis so that African countries can use the standards as a basis for their own national food legislation. It's hoped the development of such uniform and high standards will assist the governments in protecting their consumers from deception and fraud as well as from unfair competition. The standardisation would also improve chances for the African nations to compete in foreign markets with their processed food products.
