  • Description

As the conclusion of the Palestinian debate in the United Nations General Assembly drew near, Israeli forces continued their crack-down on the restive Arab population on the West Bank of the Jordan and Jerusalem.

In Jerusalem on Friday (22 November) police and soldiers fired warning shots in the air to disperse demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags and placards. The demonstrators ran towards the Damascus Gate in the ancient city walls and shut it in the face of the security forces.

Troops and police forced the gate open and arrested about thirty demonstrators after a scuffle. One policeman and several demonstrators were injured.

SYNOPSIS: In Jerusalem, about one hundred Arabs staged a noisy demonstration after Friday prayers in the Al-Aqsa mosque in the Old City.

The demonstrators were mostly students who supported the Palestine Liberation Organisation and its leader Mr. Yasser Arafat. They waved Palestinian flags and carried banners and palestinian flags and carried banners and placards supporting their cause.

This was one of a series of recent demonstrations in Israeli controlled areas of the West Bank of the Jordan and Jerusalem since Mr. Arafat appeared at the United Nations last week. Israeli troops and police were determined to crush the demonstration as they had done in other cases. Israel refuses to compromise with what it regards as Arab extremists and their friends.

Heavily armed riot police and troops moved in to deal with the demonstrators and some warning shots were fired into the air. The demonstrators scattered and ran towards the Damascus Gate in the ancient City Wall and shut it.

The troops and police moved up a water-cannon and tried to force the Gate open in the face of determined opposition from those on the other side. On the previous day the Israelis had put down similar demonstrations in the towns of Jenin, Tuikarm and Jericho. They also deported five prominent Arab leaders and imposed stiff economic sanctions on the town of Ramallah. The efforts of troops and police finally succeeded and they forced their way past the Damascus Gate.

The demonstrators did not give up without a struggle and several were injured. About thirty demonstrators were arrested and one policeman was injured. Security Forces are preparing for more demonstration after the result of the UN General Assembly vote on Palestine is known.
