Background: Officials attempting a forcible take-over of farmland for a new Tokyo international airport at Narita 60 kms east of the Japanese capital today (Wednesday) clashed head-on with radical students wielding heavy bamboo poles.
Three airport guards and one young boy were injured in the brief fight as the vanguard of about 1,000 officials and police began their move against students and farmers entrenched near the end of what will be the main runway.
About 100 snake-dancing students met the officials as they marched down a narrow road to where their main opposition has barricaded themselves in a complex of wooden forts, trenches and tunnels.
Suddenly fighting began and guards, students and photographers spilled into a road-side ditch. A swirling struggle continued for several minutes until the students retreated. Officials also retreated behind their make shift wooden shields as the confrontation turned into a stone-throwing match.
The clash was the first on the third day of an attempt by officials to take over some 1,500 square metres of land required for Tokyo's second international airport. Farmers opposed to the project, supported by several thousand left-wing students, are making their last stand on this land where construction work continues all around them. Some of the farmers have said they are prepared to die to stop the airport project going ahead.
Airport officials later launched a second offensive but were beaten back for a second time. Then the demonstrators went on the offensive, stoned police and attempted to break into the construction company's headquarters but were finally beaten back by guards.
