Background: Today, the U.S. Army unveils the VULCAN/CHAPARRAL Air Defense System to public view for the first time.

The system combines, as companion weapons, the point defense capabilities of a 20mm automatic cannon with the area capability of a missile system. It has been designed to provide a defense not now available against low-flying aircraft. This project managed system, which is being developed by the U.S. Army Material Command, is to be deployed in composite battalions in the late 1960's.

The XM167 towed VULCAN Air Defense Weapon is a lightweight helicopter transportable version of the self-propelled XM 163 weapon. It is for use by airborne and airmobile units.

Firing tests at the General Electric range near Burlington, Vermont, where these films were taken were completed previous to shipment for Army evaluation.

The towed version is basically similar to the self-propelled; however, it has a conventional linked ammunition box in place of the linkless system.

These firings illustrate the VULCAN's awesome firepower.

This XM163 self-propelled VULCAN weapon is under evaluation at the Army's Air Defense Center at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Mobility tests demonstrate the system's ruggedness and speed on a variety of surfaces.

Tests featured dry-run tracking on F-100 "Super Sabre" jet fighter aircraft and live firing at radio-controlled drones. The VULCAN gun, from which the weapon system gets its name, is a six-barrel, 20mm cannon originally developed by Army Ordinance for jet aircraft installation. The gun design is based on the Civil War Gatling Gun.
