    BRITAIN'S JOHN SURTEES, AT THE WHEEL OF A BLOOD-RED FERRARI, MADE THE GREATEST COME-BACK IN THE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL MOTOR RACING YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHEN HE WON THE FAMOUS 1,000 KILOMETRE MONZA RACE AT A SPEED OF OVER 160 MILES AN HOUR THROUGH DRIVING RAIN.

    ONLY SEVEN MONTHS AGO DOCTORS GAVE HIM HOURS TO LIVE, AFTER HE HAD CRASHED AT 100 MILES AN HOUR (160 K.P.H.) DURING A RACE IN CANADA. HE SUFFERED SPINAL INJURIES, A BROKEN PELVIS AND A RUPTURED KIDNEY.

    FROM THE START OF THE RACE AT MONZA, SURTEES AND HIS CO-DRIVER MIKE PARKES WENT INTO THE LEAD, AND COVERED THE DISTANCE IN SIX HOURS, FIVE MINUTES, ELEVEN POINT SIX SECONDS AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 103.1 MILES AN HOUR (165 K.P.H.).

    SECOND WERE MASTERN GREGORY (UNITED STATES) AND JOHN WHITMORE (BRITAIN) IN THEIR FORD GT40, WHO WERE ONE LAP BEHIND THE LEADERS. THIRD PLACE WAS TAKEN BY HERBERT MULLER OF WEST GERMANY AND WILLY MAIRESSE OF BELGIUM WHO WERE TWO LAPS BEHIND.
