  • Description

President William Tolbert of Liberia says he's hopeful that the North-South conference in Paris will help close the gap between industrialised nations and developing countries. Mr. Tolbert, on a five-day private visit to Italy, said that despite the failure of the conference in the French capital to produce any definite results, he was still hopeful that progress would be eventually achieved.

SYNOPSIS: The Liberian leader visited Italian Premier Giulio Andreotti following a courtesy call on Italian President Giovanni Leone. Although President Tolbert's visit was private, it was officially announced afterwards that he and the Italian premier discussed bilateral and international issues, including the North-South talks. Both leaders agreed that the 27-nation conference failed to resolve any of the important issues. They also discussed developments in Africa, and the Liberian President stressed that problems there could only be solved by the African peoples themselves.

Italy and the third world are becoming more closely involved in trading areas, and Ghana's Foreign Commissioner, Roger Felli, was in the Italian capital at the same time as President Tolbert. President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia is also due to visit Italy at the end of the month (June).
