  • Description

AS A STATE OF UNEASY CALM REIGNED IN RIOT-TORN NORTHERN IRELAND TODAY (SATURDAY), REPUBLIC OF IRELAND TROOPS CONTINUED TO ARRIVE AT THE BASE CAMPS WHICH HAVE BEEN SET UP ALONG THE BORDER NEAR LETTERKENNY TO, ACCORDING TO THE EIRE GOVERNMENT, RUN FIELD HOSPITALS AND BE READY TO HELP OUT IF REQUIRED TO INTERVENE IN THE NORTH'S TROUBLES. AT THE SAME TIME, PRIME MINISTER JACK LYNCH TOLD AN INTERVIEWER IN DUBLIN THAT HIS GOVERNMENT CONTINUED TO MAINTAIN ITS POSITION OF INSISTING FOR A UNTIED NATIONS OR A JOINT BRITISH-IRISH PEACE-KEEPING FORCE TO TAKE OVER THE PATROLLING OF THE NORTHERN COUNTIES.

WHILE BRITISH TROOPS PATROLLED THE STREETS OF LONDONDERRY AND BELFAST IN NORTHERN IRELAND, TEMPERS SEEMED TO HAVE TEMPORARILY COOLED - BUT NO ONE WAS TAKING THE CALM FOR GRANTED. MEANWHILE, IN DUBLIN, A DEMONSTRATION OF SOME 200 PERSONS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE BRITISH EMBASSY - SCENE OF AN ANTI-BRITISH FLAG-BURNING INCIDENT YESTERDAY - AND HURLED STONES AND BOTTLES AT THE BUILDING AFTER POLICE HAD PREVENTED THE DEMONSTRATORS FROM GETTING ARMS FROM A DUBLIN BARRACKS.

AS EIRE'S MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, DR. PATRICK HILLERY, LEFT FOR THE UNITED STATES TO PRESENT HIS COUNTRY'S CASE TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL - HIS PRIME MINISTER, JACK LYNCH, WAS INTERVIEWED IN DUBLIN.
