  • Description

THOUSANDS OF STUDENT RALLIED OUTSIDE CAIRO UNIVERSITY, EGYPT, OCTOBER 2, TO EXPRESS SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENT NASSER AND TO CONDEMN THE SEPTEMBER 29 REVOLT IN SYRIA WHICH CAUSED A BREAK-UP OF THE 3 1/2-YEAR OLD UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC.

AT ONE TIME IT WAS THOUGHT THE EXCITED STUDENTS MIGHT MARCH ON THE TURKISH EMBASSY, ABOUT 500 YARDS AWAY, BECAUSE OF THE GENERAL RESENTMENT AMONG EGYPTIANS THAT TURKEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE FIRST COUNTRIES TO RECOGNIZE THE INDEPENDENT GOVERNMENT OF SYRIA.

AT THE UNIVERSITY LATER THE SAME DAY, PRESIDENT NASSER WAS GREETED WITH THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE WHEN HE TOLD STUDENTS THE REVOLT WAS "A SHOCK THAT CAN TURN OUT TO BE A DISASTER. WE MUST HALT AND SEE WHERE WE STAND... WE MUST CONVERT THIS SHOCK INTO A DRIVING FORCE THAT CRUSHES ALL REACTIONARY ELEMENTS ALL OVER THE ARAB WORLD."
