  • Description

Secretary-General U Thant has filmed and recorded for television, worldwide use, the following end-of-year message to children and young people:
It is not often that someone who does my kind of work gets the chance to sit and talk to millions of children in many countries. But that is my good fortune today.

We have come to the end of another year, and I must tell you that it has really been rather a difficult and dangerous one. There is a lot of distrust and bad feeling between some important countries. There are places which have serious troubles, like the Congo in Africa, where the peace and unity of the country is not yet settled. There was serious fighting between China and India; and in October things were so tense over Cuba that many people thought a war would break out. But that was stopped, by the wisdom and common sense of the leaders concerned. And there was something else around to prevent disaster: the United Nations.

Now, many of you, I am sure, know quite well what the United Nations is: more than one hundred countries meet together and they speak for nearly all the people in the world.

The United Nations has become quite worried at the way the world is divided between the poor countries and the rich ones; between those countries where there is enough to eat, where the children go to school, where there are enough doctors and nurses -- and the other countries where these things are missing or insufficient.

The very fact that you have a television set or a radio makes it likely that you are on the fortunate side of this great gap between the haves and the have-nots. Very probably you go to school, you live in a house with running water and electricity -- and maybe you don't have too much time to think of the millions of other children without all these very important advantages. The United Nations has been thinking about them for a long time now, and what is more, has been doing quite a lot to help them.

I think you know what the initials UNICEF stand for: United Nations Children's Fund. UNICEF is the only one of the United Nation's services to the world which give all its time to helping children. For 16 years UNICEF has been working to bring the children of the poorer countries food and medicine, and has been helping train doctors and nurses to care for children. It is now also helping in training teachers for children so that they will grow up to be useful citizens of their country.

Now the United Nations has drawn up a great plan. Most of you will be quite grown up when it is finished. This is a plan to improve life for two-thirds of the people in the world, and it is called the United Nations Development Decade.

Those of us who work in the United Nations, and for it, are doing all we can to make this great plan a reality. If it succeeds, then you a good chance of living your grown-up lives in a world which is steadier, happier and more peaceful than this one of 1962.

Good luck and happiness to you all.
