    In Moscow on Tuesday (21 February), Soviet and Syrian leaders issued a joint condemnation of the Middle East peace initiative made recently by Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat.

    SYNOPSIS: News of the two countries' common approach towards the peace moves came after a meeting in the Kremlin between the Soviet President, Leonid Brezhnev and the Syrian President, Hafez Al-Assad. According to Reuters, the purpose of President Assad's three day visit was to co-ordinate Syrian opposition to direct peace negotiations between Israel and Egypt. It's the first visit President Assad has made to Russia for three years.

    According to the Soviet news agency, Tass the two leaders had a thorough and constructive exchange of opinions. The Soviet Prime Minister, Alexei Kosygin was also at the talks. The meeting was reported by Tass to have taken place in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding. Both sides agreed Egypt's policy of direct negotiations with Israel had damaged Arab interests.

    President Assad later said that Middle East peace could only be achieved on the basis of United Nations resolutions and with Soviet participation.
