  • Description

LEFT WING STUDENTS TOOK PART IN A VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHEN THE UNITED STATES NUCLEAR SNOOK ARRIVED AT YOKOSUKA HARBOUR.

THE 2,830 TON NUCLEAR SUBMARINE SNOOK ENTERED YOKOSUKA HARBOUR EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING FOR A FIVE DAY REST AND RECREATION VISIT FOR THE CREW OF 97. AS THE SNOOK DOCKED, ABOUT A HUNDRED LEFT WING STUDENTS CHARGED THE MAIN DOCK GATES THROWING STONES. THE STUDENTS WERE MET AND FOUGHT OFF BY FIFTY RIOT POLICE.

THE STUDENTS CLAIM THAT THE VISIT OF THE SUBMARINE FORESHADOWS THE INTRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO JAPAN. SINCE THE FIRST VISIT OF A NUCLEAR SUBMARINE TO JAPAN IN NOVEMBER, 1964, LEFT WING GROUPS HAVE MAINTAINED A PROTEST CAMPAIGN ASSERTING THAT THE VISITS RISK DRAGGING JAPAN INTO THE VIETNAM WAR AND THAT THEY PRESENT A RADIATION HAZARD.

THERE HAVE BEEN EIGHT PREVIOUS VISITS TO JAPAN BY NUCLEAR SUBMARINES, ALL OF THEM AT SASEBO ON THE SOUTHERN ISLAND OF KYUSHU. THE SNOOK WAS THE FIRST NUCLEAR SUBMARINE TO VISIT YOKOSUKA.
