  • Description

The science of cryogenics - or subjecting materials to extremely low temperatures - the bene brought into use in the town of Lacrosse in the United States to aid the ever-growing recycling industry. Old telephone cables are treated so that the valuable inner wire can be recovered, and rubber from old tyres is precesses so that it can be mixed with asphalt for street paving.

The materials are first dipped in sub-freezing liquid nitrogen and then, in a very brittle form, are taken to a hammer mill. In the case of the telephone cables, the brittleness allows the outer covering to be easily strioped off and the wire crumbled for remelting. The old tyres become rigid an can be broken into granular form.

Cryogenics therefore not only allows these valuable materials to be reused but prevents them from adding to pollution problems by lying around as waste.
