    A 70-YEAR-OLD AMERICAN NAVIGATOR, WILLIAM WILLIS, SET OUT ON A 10-TON STEEL PONTOON RAFT FROM LIMA HARBOUR ON THURSDAY BOUND FOR SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, SOME 10,000 MILES (16,000 KILOMETRES) AND THREE MONTHS AWAY.

    ACCOMPANIED BY TWO CATS, MR. WILLIS AND HIS RAFT CALLED "AGE UNLIMITED" LEFT THE HARBOUR ON A TOWLINE PROVIDED BY A PERUVIAN NAVAL TUG. AT A POINT 45 MILES (70 KILOMETRES) OFF THE COASTLINE, THE RAFT WAS CAST ADRIFT. MR. WILLIS HOPES THE HUMBOLDT CURRENT WILL CARRY HIM NORTH OF SAMOA AND THEN TO SYDNEY.

    WILLIS, BORN OF CZECH PARENTS IN HAMBURG, GERMANY, BECAME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN WHEN HE WAS 20. NINE YEARS AGO HE SAILED AT 32FT BY 20FT (TEN METRES BY SIX METRES) RAFT MADE OF SEVEN BALSA WOOD LOGS FROM CALLAO TO PAGO PAGO IN THE SAMOAN ISLANDS - A JOURNEY OF 7,000 MILES (11,200 KILOMETRES) IN 115 DAYS.
