  • Description

The Sixth Islamic Foreign Ministers' Conference opened in Jeddah, capital of Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (12 July), with a plea for Moslem solidarity and a denunciation of Israel from King Khalid of Saudi Arabia.

In a gesture to the Palestinians, the King entered the 40-nation conference accompanied by the Palestinian commando leader, Yasser Arafat, who was in Jeddah for a brief visit.

In a strongly worded attack on racial discrimination, the King told the ministers that "Zionism is the most atrocious form of imperialism and colonialism". The King's statement was mainly devoted to the subject of Palestine, and it was read on his behalf by Prince Saud Al-Faisal, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and the Chairman of the Conference."
The statement also urged the Conference delegates to press ahead with the work of Islamic solidarity which had been begun by the late King Faisal, who was assassinated in March. King Khalid recalled that his brother had wanted to pray in the Al-Aq??? Mosque in an Arab Jerusalem before he died.
