THE HELICOPTERS, TWO HUGE SIKORSKY HH-3E SEA KINGS OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE RESCUE SERVICE, LANDED AFTER A 30-HOUR FLIGHT. THEY WERE DELAYED BY BAD WEATHER OVER THE ATLANTIC.

THEY TOOK OFF FROM THE NEW YORK CITY NAVAL STATION AND WERE EXPECTED ORIGINALLY TO MAKE THE 3,615-MILE (5,816-KM) TRIP IN 28 HOURS.

THE AIR FORCE SAID THERE HAD BEEN TWO PREVIOUS ATLANTIC CROSSINGS BY HELICOPTERS BUT THIS WAS THE FIRST NON-STOP FLIGHT.

THE TWO SEA KINGS WERE REFUELLED NINE TIMES DURING THE FLIGHT AND PASSED OVER LONDON EN ROUTE TO LE BOURGET. THEY WERE ACCOMPANIED BY A USAF 'HERCULES' AIRCRAFT, WHICH CARRIED OUT THE REFUELLING OPERATION.
